Xavier le Roy - Self Unfinished (1998) / Le Sacre du Printemps
French choreographer Xavier Le Roy defies categorisation as a dance-maker, drawing on diverse influences from the worlds of science, performance art and contemporary dance.
Here he presents two pieces over two consecutive weekends. The first, Self Unfinished (1998), takes the audience on a journey of metamorphosis as Xavier Le Roy transforms into an extraordinary hybrid creature – part machine, part alien, part human. Employing all manner of physical devices, Le Roy creates a world of illusion that is as unsettling as it is transfixing.
Created in 2007, Le Sacre du Printemps is inspired by a documentary of the Berlin Philharmonic during rehearsal. Fascinated by the functions of the conductor's movements, Xavier Le Roy created a piece in which a range of the conductor’s actions are painstakingly recreated on a bare stage, to a recorded soundtrack. The audience, seated in a surround-sound environment, in turn becomes a helpless, instrument-less orchestra.
